With improvements already approved and beginning construction soon at the deadly intersection of Atlantic and Washington avenues, the Department of Transportation is turning its attention to the stretch of Washington between Atlantic and Eastern Parkway, with proposed improvements (PDF) including bike lanes and new pedestrian islands.

Brownstoner reports that the DoT presented the proposal to Community Board 8's Transportation Committee last night, and though there were no Prospect Park West-style objections to the proposed bike lanes, residents were concerned about lost parking spaces. Those concerns aside, the committee approved the proposal, which will go before the full board for a final vote on May 12, meaning we may have a slightly less highway-like Washington Avenue by the end of the year.

Other planned improvements—in addition to extending the sidewalk and adding a pedestrian island at the lawless intersection of Washington, Grand and Park, as shown at top—include:

shortened bus stops, which will add a few parking spaces to the thoroughfare; nine new loading zones, which will subtract at least 40 parking spots; new and standardized muni meters; new signal timing; and a street-striping plan. The street striping will be much like Park Slope's Fifth Avenue, and include five-foot bike lanes on both sides of the avenue

Now if only they'd do something about that narrow, pothole-filled gauntlet of a block between Atlantic and Fulton.
