More Unwanted Sports Bars Coming to North Park Slope

The fight over Prime 6, a bar-restaurant on the Park Slope-Prospect Heights border, was quick and ugly: over six weeks, a struggle between residents and a developer over operating hours and other small matters became an epic battle about race and community transformation. It's finally been settled, but it seems now that it was only the beginning: as the unsightly Barclays Center at the Atlantic Yards development comes closer to completion, more such sports bars are entering into planning stages, revealing the drastic transformation coming to the area where North Slope, Fort Greene and Prospect Heights intersect. The stadium's shell now looms physically over the neighborhoods, its walls apparent at the end of streets. But its figurative domination is just beginning to take shape.

On Pacific Street and Flatbush Avenue—the current site of a furniture store—entrepreneurs want to build Players Gastro Pub and Sportsbar, Atlantic Yards Report reports. The 3500 square foot spot would seat 150, feature two bars, and also host a pizza-falafel takeout spot. Residents worry it could return trouble to that stretch of Pacific Street, which historically has had problems with drugs and prostitution. And it's not just Players: two doors down, another bar is in the works. Machavelle filed for a liquor license in mid-April, Atlantic Yards Report also reported.

These new spots are making it easier to imagine how different the area is soon to become; that is, the effect Atlantic Yards will have on the area is leaving the realm of the theoretical.
