Hipsters: Too Cool for Census?

Not being counted in the census = the ultimate obscurity

At this week's city council hearing on why the 2010 census counts were so much lower than expected, members of the legislative body got sidetracked by the matter of hipsters. Councilman Al Vann asked what a hipster was. The regional director of the census testified that the bureau had an outreach program for hipsters: it sent teams to Williamsburg bars! But Councilwoman Diana Reyna—who, yes, represents parts of Williamsburg—thinks these efforts were unsuccessful.

City Limits reports:

Reyna theorized that "hipsters" may be part of the cause for the inconsistency of the census numbers, stating that some of them "only want to be counted in their home state," and that they might not participate in the Census because it wouldn't be "cool."
