This Friday, May 13, as part of our very own Audiophile series
, the Brooklyn Museum will be hosting two very special indie electro-indie-pop bands, MEN and Savoir Adore. As always, entry to the show will be free with museum admission, and there will be free Brooklyn Republic cocktails
from 7 to 8pm. But really, that's just the icing on the alcohol-soaked, Friday night dance-party cake—below, a few words about each band, and why you should make it a point to get yourself over to the Brooklyn Museum to catch the whole thing, Friday the 13th and Friday Night Lights
Meaningful performance art through dance music didn't die with the inanity of the Lady Gaga's meat dress and egg-mobiles, y'all. MEN
is a performance art collective and band whose smart, political commentary ranges from microfinance to gender identity, and does so over upbeat, Strokes-y guitar riffs and very danceable beats. The band is made up of experienced veterans of the electro-pop world—MEN started off as a side project of Le Tigre
, and now consists of JD Samson (Le Tigre), Ginger Brooks Takahashi and Michael O' Neill. They've toured with queer dance icon Peaches in 2009 and recently released their debut album Talk About Body
in February. This Friday is a rare opportunity to see them live at the Brooklyn Museum, where they'll also be performing with Brooklyn locals Savoir Adore
. In the meantime, check out the music video
for single "Off Our Backs."
We called it two years ago
, but we'll say it again: Savoir Adore
is one of those NYC bands you need to hear. The band tags themselves as "experimental pop," but that generic description fails to describe the dreamy, gorgeous interplay between Deidre Muro and Paul Hammer's soft, weaving vocals. The project started when the two met at New York University and challenged themselves to write a concept album in 48 hours. When Muro and Hammer actually accomplished that goal (by confining themselves to Hammer's parents' house in upstate New York), the result was so successful they decided to keep on keeping on. Savoir Adore released debut album The Wooded Forest
in 2010, and here's a sneak peek
of their latest single, "Sparrow."
