Traditionally, canned beer is as frowned upon as screw-cap wine, but both are gaining new legitimacy. Cans have certain advantages: they're "lightweight, compact, and block out harmful sunlight, which causes beer to 'skunk,'" the brewery's operations manager Karl Knoop tell us. "New canning technologies keep the beer fresh-tasting, so forget previous notions that canned beer is inferior."
Summer Ale has an amusing history. It's "based on an old English beer-style called a Light Dinner Ale, a.k.a. Family Ale," Knoop tells us. "It was the beer the entire family would drink with dinner, due to its relatively lower alcohol content."
Three bars will be hosting launch parties for the can tonight, including Good Company in Williamsburg and Pub One in DUMBO. (More info here.) Bring some home for the young-uns.
