Jerez, profiled by the Daily News this spring, turned 19 last month; he's an outfielder listed at 6'4", 190 lbs, and bats and throws left-handed. He lives in Bushwick with his father, sister and aunt, having moved here from Santiago, in the Dominican Republic, just two years ago. He's a highly touted amateur prospect with a standing scholarship offer at a junior college; it's likely he'll sign with Boston once they agree on money.
The Red Sox have a short-season A team, the Lowell Spinners, in the NY-Penn League, so it's possible, depending on his development plan, that you'll get to see him play later this summer, when Lowell comes to town to face the Cyclones or the Staten Island Yankees.
According to Peter Gammons's Twitter, Jerez, who traveled on a Yankees-sponsored all-star team this year, told Yanks GM Brian Cashman his favorite team was the Red Sox, because of fellow Dominicans David Ortiz and and Pedro Martinez.
