One Dead in Brighton Beach Boardwalk Shooting Spree

It was the worst Brooklyn-Queens Day ever. Summer got off to a literal bang when shots were fired on the Brighton Beach boardwalk yesterday, killing one teenager and putting four people in the hospital. The violence began, the Post reports, when two 22-year-old cousins looked at some gang members the wrong way; police blamed, in part, Olde English 40s. "It was a bad combination of guns, heat, beer and angry young men," a police source told the tabloid. One of the offending glancers was struck in the arm and leg; the other was hit in the head with a bottle. But four bystanders were collateral damage in the hail of bullets, the beach being unusually crowded with young people because schools were closed for Brooklyn-Queens Day.

Here's a rundown of the rest of the carnage:

+ Harlem 16-year-old Tysha Jones was shot and died. "She was crying, and she fell back and she just wasn't moving at all," a witness told the Post.

+ Jones' 17-year-old friend, James White, was grazed in the shoulder.

+ 23-year-old French exchange student Julien Boudet was hit in the leg by a stray bullet while eating lunch at Tatiana (whose exterior was used in the Bored to Death Brighton Beach episode!)

+ A stray bullet went through the sixth-floor window of an elderly woman's apartment in a neighboring building while she was watching TV. (She wasn't hurt.)

Two men were detained for questioning.

The blog Sheepshead Bites followed the story all evening yesterday, publishing several videos of the immediate aftermath as well as photographs.
