News Aboard the East River Ferry's Maiden Voyage

After months of anticipation, and pier construction that's still underway, the East River Fairy made its maiden voyage this morning, although it was the second ferry to come into the landing at North 6th Street in Williamsburg that all the assembled politicians—including Mayor Bloomberg, Brooklyn borough president Marty Markowitz, Manhattan borough president Scott Stringer, Department of Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan, local district leader Lincoln Restler—boarded.

All the important people got off at 34th Street and into waiting cars, concluding their ceremonial use of sustainable and public transportation.

Back on schedule after losing the precious cargo and headed to the landing at South Williamsburg, we passed one of the other two rush hour ferries. At off-peak hours there will only be two ferries on the route.

The East River Ferry remains free through June 24, at which point single fare will be $4 with a $1 surcharge for bringing a bicycle on board. A day pass is $12, and a monthly pass is $140. On summer Fridays the route extends to Atlantic Avenue and Governors Island.
