Art Huge New KAWS Sculpture at Foot of Exhibitionist Hotel Covers Its Eyes

The Brooklyn-based artist KAWS, whose work we've encountered at art fairs and on album covers, just joined this summer's giant figurative public sculpture competition, installing his 2010 piece "Companion (Passing Through)" at the foot of the Meatpacking District's voyeur- and exhibitionist-beloved Standard hotel.
The 16-foot fiberglass sculpture will remain on view in the public plaza at the corner of West 13th and Washington streets through October, when it heads to the High Museum of Art in Atlanta. The piece features a Mickey Mouse-ish figure (with skull and crossbones shapes in lieu of big round ears) covering its eyes, with KAWS' trademark Xs on its gloves and where its eyes should be. But can this shy cartoon character compete with Urs Fischer's yellow teddy bear, and how does it stack up against Jaume Plensa's big flattened head or Ai Weiwei's dozen zodiac heads?
