Music Photos: Best Coast and the Decemberists Brave the Elements at Prospect Park

Content knowing that the band they were watching wasn’t going to split up any time soon, a sold-out crowd braved the rain and packed Prospect Park to see the Decemberists last night. Touring behind their most recent album, the still-excellent The King is Dead, the band, led by Colin Meloy and sans Jenny Conlee who’s recovering from breast cancer surgery, played a two-hour set that mixed new favorites (“Rox in the Box,” “Don’t Carry It All,” both of which had the group doing their best to sound like Fables of the Reconstruction and any of Neil Young’s country-leaning albums, and actually succeeding) with old classics (“July, July!” and “The Chimbley Sweep”). And yes, stuff from The Crane Wife and The Hazards of Love, the band’s most decisive records (why they continue to bother with “The Perfect Crime” is a mystery not worth the bother). The highlight of the evening was “This Is Why We Fight,” from King, which has quickly become the Decemberists’ anthem: “And this is why, this is why/Why we fight, come Hell.” All we ask next time, Colin, please play “The Mariner’s Revenge Song.” Photos of the Decemberists and openers Best Coast, courtesy Ms. Nadia Chaudhury, after the jump.
