Food & Drink / News Historic Boiler To Become Brooklyn Bridge Park Concession Stand

In 2006 the Landmarks Preservation Commission voted to demolish the historic 1936 New York City Department of Purchase Storehouse at the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge in DUMBO, but when the stylish building came down in 2008 to make way for the expanding Brooklyn Bridge Park its modernist boiler house was left behind. Now McBrooklyn reports that the stately little brick structure with its octagonic smokestack is being turned into a concession stand for the new park.
Given the recent history of Brooklyn Bridge Park's attempts to convert historic structures within its boundaries for new, private uses, one wonders what procedure, if any, was followed to turn the historic structure—a part of the Fulton Ferry Historic District—into a food stand with a drive-thru-style service window and counter. The only way to make up for this grotesque conversion is to get Grimaldi's to open a by-the-slice pizza stand in there, using the boiler as a pizza oven.
