2011 DUMBO Arts Festival Will Be Brought to You by AT&T

Dumbo Arts Festival

A couple months ago AT&T got involved with the Williamsburg Gallery Association's 2nd Fridays art walks, and now the telecommunications giant is dialing into another huge Brooklyn art tradition: the DUMBO Arts Festival. Beginning with the fest's 15th annual presentation, September 23-25 2011, AT&T will be the DAF's headlining sponsor.

But, ok, what exactly can a major telecommunications corporation contribute to an outdoor festival with pop-up art exhibitions and open studios? Well, according to a press release sent out on Wednesday announcing the sponsorship:

AT&T will be integrated into various aspects of the festival, including sponsoring a signature installation that will be a cornerstone of this year’s artistic programming. Dozens of guides with Wi-Fi-enabled tablets and spread out across DUMBO will direct, teach and interact with festival-goers using the robust AT&T network. The festival will include a new lounge with amenities powered by AT&T, including charging stations and AT&T Wi-Fi-enabled products featuring an interactive festival map.

Cool? Yeah, sure—although, last we heard, DUMBO already has free wi-fi.

Nevertheless, between the AT&T partnership and incoming DUMBO Cultural Affairs Director and DAF organizer Lisa Kim's deep art world connections, this looks poised to be the DAF's biggest year.

Brooklyn borough president Marty Markowitz concludes the partnership announcement in his trademark "Talking Marty Markowitz Doll" fashion: "May the wireless force be with you!"

The 2011 DUMBO Arts Festival runs September 23-25, 6pm to 9pm on Fri. Sept, 23; 12pm to 8pm on Sat. Sept. 24; and 12pm to 6pm on Sun. Sept. 25. All outdoor projections are open from 6pm to midnight all three nights.
