Kanye, Kanye, Kanye. As much as I detest giving his idiosyncrasies more coverage than the obscene amount of attention they've already received, I'm sorry, this might just be one of the most clueless, delusional things he's said...of all time. From the Associated Press:
The 34-year-old rapper known for his outbursts was the headline act at the Big Chill music festival Saturday night, where he ranted in the middle of his set about being misunderstood and underappreciated.
"I walk through the hotel and I walk down the street, and people look at me like I'm (expletive) insane, like I'm Hitler," he said. "One day the light will shine through and one day people will understand everything I ever did."
So, yes, most people reading this who aren't Anders Behring Breivik will snort at the idiocy of the statement, chuckle at the megalomania, shrug it off, whatever. Then again, most people reading this also won't be deterred from spending money on Watch the Throne.
Obviously, Kanye West is a great producer, someone who's staked himself out as a musical icon, a visionary, a fashionista, etc. etc. etc. But to shower power, praise and money on someone who brings up Hitler's legacy in such a strange, misguided context is effed up. Adolf Hitler murdered six million Jews. You, Kanye, elbowed and interrupted a teenage country singer at an awards show. To conflate the way people view the two actions is beyond stupid—it's willfully careless.
How much of Kanye's musical ability can cover for his complete incompetence and douchebaggery as a public figure? Also, how uncreative is that Hitler analogy? As a rapper, you'd think he'd be able to come up with something better. Oh wait, not unless adoration of Kanye West actually has nothing to do with music, and all to do with the badass, rogue mogul image, in which case he can say whatever he wants as long as he continues to dress well. Icky.
