In all fairness, it was for charity. Regine Chassagne (Arcade Fire), Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam) and Owen Pallett performed a cover of Bruce Springsteen's "My City of Ruins" at an Artists for Peace and Justice fundraiser luncheon at the Toronto Film Festival this past weekend. The footage was filmed on an iPhone that kept receiving texts, but the cinematographer did do us one great favor by panning the instrument to give viewers an eyeful of scenery. Who could have planned more of an ironic gaffe than this: Having three artists perform a cover of a song originally written about depressing economics and the physical deterioration of an old New Jersey resort town, and having them perform it by one of the ritziest Greek Revival poolsides I have ever seen? Let's see how many Bluetooths in the audience we can count.
