A homeless man hanged himself with a rope in Greenpoint's leafy McGolrick park on Sept. 24 at 8:30 p.m. The Brooklyn Paper reports
this is the fifth death inside a Greenpoint park in the last 15 months, including another homeless man who hanged himself in Barge Park in March. Many if not all of the park deaths—including a hypothermia case in McCarren Park—have involved the homeless. “We can’t go another winter where we have guys dying of hypothermia in the park,” Councilman Steve Levin told
. “We can’t turn a blind eye to it and the community wants to do something.”
Many in the community, including Levin, recently opposed plans for a homeless shelter in the neighborhood, on McGuinness Boulevard. But critics of the shelter say one of its major problems is that it wouldn't service local homeless residents; homeless people from Manhattan would be bused in.
