News Long-Delayed Greenpoint Avenue Bridge Bike Lane Delayed Some More

The Greenpoint Avenue Bridge—technically the John Jay Byrne Bridge—could be the best bike link between Brooklyn and Queens (especially given the Pulaski's impossibly narrow shared bike-pedestrian passage), but the existing bike lanes in both directions end abruptly on the Greenpoint side of the bridge (pictured) and are non-existent on the Sunnyside, er, side. And plans (PDF) to remedy that situation have hit another snag.
Brownstoner reports that, while the lanes on the bridge are a sure thing, Community Board 1 has voted against the proposed reconfiguration of the bridge approach between Humboldt Street and Kingsland Avenue because it would eliminate 50 parking spaces.
Of course, the Department of Transportation doesn't technically need the board's approval to go ahead with the lane installation and parking space elimination. On the other hand, they probably would rather avoid another lawsuit from overly litigious lane-haters. But hopefully someday soon cyclists will have a safe way of getting over Newtown Creek without dodging pedestrians.
