The latest assault happened in Windsor Terrace, where police say the attacker went after a woman walking on Vanderbilt Street.
According to authorities, he groped her, she screamed and fought back, and he ran. He vanished toward Greenwood Cemetery, and police say it appears he knows the area well.
While another woman was attacked in Sunset Park:
In the other case, police are trying to find the man responsible for a brazen sexual assault in Sunset Park in which a 35-year-old woman was attacked, sexually assaulted and robbed right outside Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic church on 59th Street.
The assault and robbery happened near the church's parking lot at 5:30 a.m. Sunday.
Apparently the police don't think the Sunset Park attack was connected with the other twelve that have taken place around Park Slope, Windsor Terrace, and Sunset Park.
Police are trying to determine if all the cases are linked, but do not believe the church assault to be part of the same pattern.
So that makes twelve that are maybe related, plus this one that police say is also unrelated, plus that time a few weeks ago when a women was robbed and made to remove her underwear at knife-point at the Fort Hamilton Parkway F Stop. If there really are three different attackers in the twelve related cases, that makes a total of five men grabbing, groping, raping, and forcibly removing the underwear of the women of three small neighborhoods. What the shit?
According to Ray Kelly,
Detectives have been working the other cases relentlessly.
"They are doing an awful lot, a lot of canvassing is going on," NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly said. "They are actually showing videos to the witnesses, taking out laptop computers, showing it in places such as central booking, where arrests are being processed."
Good? I guess? Maybe now that it's cooler and women won't wear as many skirts this will go away? Also, what's up with Federico Chamorro Yax, the man they arrested last week in connection with the assaults?
I've got to say, the whole copycat angle on this thing is puzzling to me. Does some man just see on the news that someone else with his basic build is assaulting women and say to himself, "Wow, that guy's really got it figured out! I'm going to head over there and get a piece of that." Wouldn't you be more likely to go to a different neighborhood, one that's not crawling with cops that really want to find someone to pin these crimes on so that people will quit bitching about them? I don't know. I guess it's not really in anyone's best interest to try and sort out the logic of sex attackers.
