When you get
MoMA on board to commission your show, lasers are a very real possibility. Such is the case with Antony Hegarty, whose always-stirring
Antony & the Johnsons will perform a majestic, large-scale concert January 26 at Radio City Music Hall. There will be lasers, yes. Apparently a 60-piece orchestra as well, and at least one or two people in dramatic robes we'll guess. The piece, entitled
Swanlights, the shared name of the band's anxious, heaving
2010 album, is intended to be an one-time-only "meditation on light, nature and femininity" culled through the songbook of all four Antony & the Johnsons albums. Hegarty joined forces with the Manchester Opera House back in 2009 to present something similar — a piece named after his previous album,
The Crying Light — for the Manchester International Festival. It
received glowing
accolades, but no reason for jealousy, the
press release articulates that
Swanlights aims to go a step further, reining in the all-star team of Nico Muhly, Rob Moose and Maxim Moston to handle symphonic arrangements, plus a team of set designers, light designers and, again, lasers.
Tickets go on sale next Saturday, November 12, at 10am.
