Classic Boardwalk Businesses to Return to Coney in 2012

After lengthy negotiations the leases have finally been signed: Ruby's and other businesses will return to the Coney Island boardwalk in the summer of 2012 after having been evicted, Amusing the Zillion reported on Friday. The Lola Star boutique will return, as will Paul's Daughter (the food stand previously known as Gregory and Paul's), the Original Coney Island Beach Shop, and a Nathan's outpost; the owners of Ruby's and Paul's Daughter signed eight-year leases with Zamperla, their landlord, which also operates Luna Park.

Zamperla had hoped to fill the spaces with upscale outlets run by Miami hoteliers. But those poetential operators backed out after their ice cream spot, Coney Cones, failed to meet expectations over this past summer, the Post reports. So, rather than have an empty boardwalk, Zamperla negotiated the return of several businesses they had evicted. "As part of the lease agreements, all the companies agreed to make substantial investments in their rental properties," the Post reports. "The businesses also agreed to stay open year round and to hire new staff from the neighborhood."

Other businesses from the original "Coney Island 8" won't be back, including Cha Cha's. On its former site, the Prospect Heights diner Tom's Restaurant will open an eatery.

Good news. I just hope they don't renovate all the personality out of Ruby's.
