On the off chance you think New York doesn't provide ample entertainment options, find comfort in the fact that after avant rap-folk weirdos WHY? were forced to cancel a large part of their U.S. tour this September, the only make-up dates the band is doing are here (and one in Hartford, but presumably because of its proximity to NYC, amirite?). The set will be seated, focusing on previously unheard, unplugged material from the forthcoming fifth LP, which, according to a press release, "looks to build upon the taut folk-rap and swaggerful psych-pop of 2008's Alopecia," the album at the foundation of the band's cult following and maybe one of the most underrated releases in the last 10 years. A few cover songs and favorites from WHY?'s previous albums will be thrown in for good measure; an audience Q&A to follow. And now it's time to watch a video of main man Yoni Wolf prepping for the road. He goes into Banana Republic asking for a cape and refers to a cardigan as "a touch of Cobain." It's pretty great.
WHY? plays two shows at Florence Gould Hall (at FIAF) on Thursday, one at 6:30pm, the other at 9:30. Buy tickets here.
