News Permanent E-Waste Drop-off Site Opening in Gowanus Next Week

How many old laptops/cameras/iPods/cell phones/Discmans/Walkmans/Game Boys/etc. do you have crammed into boxes under your bed? Is your bed actually made of obsolete but difficult to dispose of electronics? Well it's about to get much easier to divest yourself of your old gadgets responsibly after a new permanent e-waste warehouse opens in Gowanus next week.
The new E-waste Warehouse will open on January 31 at 469 President Street (at Nevins Street), and hold drop-off hours Tuesday through Saturday. The facility, run by the Lower East Side Ecology Center, will also be holding a launch party on February 4 between noon-4pm, Brokelyn reports.
In addition to taking your busted electronics, the Warehouse will sell still-functioning devices, so be sure to let them know if your first-generation iPod is magically still working. While they won't accept home appliances like microwaves and dishwashers, or media storage like CDs and VHS (those go to GreenDisk), they'll take just about everything else:
Computers (laptops & desktops, servers, mainframes)
Monitors
Printers, scanners, fax-machines, copiers
Network devices (routers, hubs, modems, etc.)
Peripherals (keyboards, mice, cables, cords, chargers, etc.)
Tablets and E-readers
Components (hard drives, CD-ROMs, circuit boards, power supplies, etc.)
TVs, VCRs, DVRs, & DVD Players
Digital Converter Boxes, Cable/Satellite Receivers
Portable music players
Audio-visual equipment
Video-games
Cell phones, pagers, PDAs
Telecommunication (phones, answering machines, etc.)
If you're really dying to offload those old electronics, the warehouse will be open for business Tuesday at 10am. And don't worry, they guarantee data security—those embarrassing photos you forgot to erase from your old hard drive will not end up in the wrong e-hands.
