Sad news today: Don Cornelius, who created, produced, and hosted the influential dance show Soul Train, was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the age of 75 early this morning. According to Los Angeles Police Department, it appears to be suicide.

Soul Train was one of the longest-running syndicated programs in TV history with over 1,100 episodes, and particularly in the 1970s and pre-MTV 1980s, it played an important role in showcasing black artists who might not have otherwise been seen on TV. Cornelius hosted the show from 1971-1993, and welcomed the likes of Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin and the Staple Singers onto the Soul Train stage, forever surrounded by a large group of dancing teenagers in their now-charmingly outdated outfits.

Every episode of Soul Train would end with Cornelius wishing us love, peace and soul. Right back at ya. Take a few minutes out of your day to ride the souuuuuuuuullllllllll train:

James Brown

Stevie Wonder

The Jackson 5

Gladys Knight & the Pips

Curtis Mayfield

The Staple Singers

Marvin Gaye

Aretha Franklin
