News Brooklyn's Next Gem of a Waterfront Park: Sunset Park's Bush Terminal Pier

Down on the Sunset Park waterfront, about halfway between the massive Industry City complex and the forthcoming state-of-the-art recycling plant, a big new park is taking shape on the Bush Terminal pier. Formerly lined with warehouses and wharves, city, state and federal officials announced plans to green the contaminated stretch of waterfront between 43rd Street and 51st Street into a park back in 2005, and now we're getting our first look at what will be a post-industrial park to rival Brooklyn Bridge Park.
Bush Terminal Pier Park, which juts out into the harbor behind the elegant Bush Terminal warehouse buildings, will include two tidal ponds, a pair of artificial turf sports fields, bike lanes, wooded open spaces, a concession area, a picnic area and space for a future environmental center. There had been talk of a mini-golf course, though its exact location is mysteriously absent from project renderings by Adrian Smith Landscape Architecture—vets of the Hudson River Park. Its long street-side esplanade and bike lanes presumably will form another crucial link at the southern end of the 14-mile Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway. The city also has ambitious plans for the park's environmental program, according to a 2009 annoucement:
In keeping with the City’s policy to encourage sustainable practices, several environmentally-conscious design elements are being considered, including on-site stormwater retention, wind turbines, solar power, the reuse of existing on- and off-site materials such as granite blocks from the existing street, and the use of shipping containers as building materials.
And while we wait for all that to take shape, here's the Bush Terminal pier at the height of its industrial activity in 1920.

We are very much looking forward to seeing Bush Terminal Pier Park take shape! Having it right in the back yard of Industry City at Bush Terminal will be a welcome addition!
