Art / News People in BRIC Houses: Construction of Fulton Avenue Cultural Center Progresses

It wasn't even four months ago that borough president Marty Markowitz, Mayor Mike Bloomberg, local politicians and folks from BRIC Arts | Media | Bklyn and Urban Glass donned hardhats to break ground on the new BRIC House at Fulton Avenue and Rockwell Place, but oh how things have changed at the historic Strand Theater. BRIC just posted photos from inside the theater, which by 2013 will reopen as a gallery-performance space-glass-blowing studio and offices for Urban Glass and BRIC.
Among the construction site images the most impressive are those of the giant dirt pit that's being dug into the Strand's ground floor. That sunken space will house BRIC's contemporary art gallery.
Eventually the ground floor's cement wall will be knocked down to be replaced with a glass facade welcoming passersby to come inside. At the rear of the 3,000 square foot gallery space will be an amphitheater space—not to be confused with the 250-seat theater that is also beginning to take shape.
