So Here Is Your 2012 SXSW Film Preview I Guess

"[N]o matter how much you do, you will always have the sense that something else, something better, is going on elsewhere."
-Nick Paumgarten, reporting on the World Economic Forum in last week's New Yorker

As you read this, I am in an airplane, or a car, or, most likely, a line, en route to or at this year's South By Southwest Film Festival, in Austin, Texas. The above-quoted article is an excellent evocation of the kind of place that makes it easy to forget your reason for being there. (Another favorite line: "Every encounter begins with an unabashed glance or two down at the other’s badge... So frequently did gazes slip to reëxamine my badge that I came to know what it must be like to have cleavage. ") But in the two previous years I've attended SXSW Film, I've seen dozens of films that've been exciting enough to remind me, and I'm sure that by the time I get out of this line and file my first dispatch from the ground I'll have seen even more. Watch this space all next week, and I'll be Tweeting via @LMagFilm and/or @therealmarkasch whenever I have a minute (I should have gotten a smartphone for this trip).
