GIN AND TONIC The Stories of John CheeverThe Chekhov of the Suburbs is to gin as Toulouse-Lautrec is to absinthe. We once tried to reenact “The Swimmer” (it was a dark, dark summer in our lives), and if we hadn’t run out of tonic somewhere near the Clintons’ Bedford Hills mansion, we would’ve made it. Let the gin blossom in you like so many jack-in-the-pulpits (Cheever’s favorite flower, ahem).
