What will be the next Tumblr to see the glory of Internet fame? I spent the weekend searching for the next big thing so you can get a heads up on the net's most promising time wasters. The following five Tumblrs share a lot of what I've come to expect from the site: weed, cats, hot girls, video games, and GIFs. As an added bonus, I've included an art world precedent for all these sites, showing that what makes a solid gold Tumblr also works for art. Now, go check out these sites out before everyone else knows about them!
Richard Kern exhibited photographs of hot girls smoking weed at the NADA art fair earlier this year, evidence that this subject is more than proper to the art and internet worlds alike.
Cats, like girls smoking weed, are also acceptable art fodder—and the Walker Art Museum is hosting its first Internet Cat Video Film Festival this fall. So, why hasn't this fat cat memed yet? Apparently, the Internet is full of mysteries.
Based on this Tumblr's content—a hearty stew of iCarly, pizza, and kittens—and rapid-fire publishing frequency, Elmo666 has got to be an actual teen. OK, there's no real art world equivalent to this one, except maybe for Teen Art Gallery because they're teens, too. I know, real deep connection here.
Mermhaus is an art gallery based in Portland, and even though I’ve got no plans to travel there, they’re really good at uploading all their install shots to Tumblr. Why’s it worth a meme? They intersperse gallery imagery with dog pics, like this mutt on a treadmill. And as we all know, animals in a gallery are trending right now, so expect this Tumblr to get popular any minute now.
Thanks to this Tumblr, I discovered a claymation Tupac Shakur and some sublime video game GIFs. We’re just waiting for Tabor Robak's chilling video for Fatima Al Qadiri's Vatican Vibes, screened at 319 Scholes and the New Museum to show up on this blog. It’s high time Robak got a little more attention from the Tumblr community.
