Word is just now beginning to spread that Bill Doss, co-founder of the Athens-based Elephant6 Recording Company and influential psych-pop band Olivia Tremor Control has died at the age of 40. No cause of death has been disclosed.

Doss was among the individuals most associated with the entire Elephant 6 collective, alongside Neutral Milk Hotel's Jeff Mangum and Robert Schneider of Apples in Stereo. As one of the primary songwriters in Olivia Tremor Control, he released two full-lengths and countless singles and EPs, as well as two proper albums with Sunshine Fix (plus one early cassette-only collection).

Olivia Tremor Control broke up in 2000, but reunited for some sporadic shows in 2005. In September of last year, they released a 3-song suite called "The Game You Play in Your Head" and were said to be working on a new album. The band had been playing shows over the past few months, including a stop at the Pitchfork Festival on July 13th and our own Northside Festival back in June.
