Young Woman Sexually Assaulted By Man Who Offered to Walk Her Home

Ugh, ugh, ugh. This is awful. Last night/this morning, a woman coming home drunk from a bar in the West Village was sexually assaulted by a guy who offered to help her get home okay.

The intoxicated woman was walking to her building near W. 4th St. and Sixth Ave. around 3 a.m. when the man approached her and asked if she was OK, cops said.

After he helped her make her way to her apartment building, the man followed her to her front door, pushed his way inside and then attacked her, according to police. [NY Daily News]

This gives me—and surely many of you—the "that could have been me" chills. Men, THIS is why women you don't know are suspicious of you, even when you're just trying to help, even though you're "clearly" a nice guy. I have seen women made fun of for being paranoid when they refuse help from strangers, worry about their friends who have left bars with strangers, cross the street or go around the block if they hear someone following them, do any of the things that, inevitably, if something awful happens people will be like WHY WASN'T SHE MORE CAREFUL?!

I feel awful for this woman, and I hope that she'll be able to recover from this. I hate it when people say stuff like "be careful out there" in response to things like this, because it has a victim-blamey tone to it, so I'll just say: this has been your daily reminder that you are not safe.
