Courtney Love Goes Head-to-Head With Madonna, 1995

The battle of crazy escalated on a fateful September day in 1995 when Madonna combatted Court's cracked-out battiness by bringing out her most prim and proper faux Brit persona. To smooth out the tension, Kurt Loder really kept the jokes coming.

Fiona Apple Does Not Like the World, 1997

The awkwardness springs from the audience's scant, scattered applause throughout the now infamous acceptance speech, like they've never heard a girl say the word "bullshit" before. Also: "No else could've produced this album, and no one else did." Fact.

Busta Rhymes and Martha Stewart Are BFFs, 1997

MTV was obviously gunning for awkward hilarity by teaming the unlikely pair of a rhyme-spitting rapper and a cake-decorating perfectionist to present the award for "Best Dance Video" and mostly succeeded, except for Martha's Look of Contempt at the 1:40 mark when Busta interrupts her. That's genuine awkwardness.
