3 Things We Learned From This 1998 Video Of Kanye West

With pretty reliable frequency, old pre-fame videos (or pictures) of celebrities surface on the internet, reminding us that all of our culture's false gods were, once upon a time, occasionally-awkward try-hards just like the rest of us.

Today's contribution is from Kanye West, lurking in the back of Ma$e's Harlem World entourage in this clip from 1998 (below). It's a delightful trip down memory lane on its own, but there are a few particularly key take-aways:

1. Before he publicly mocked him in lyrics (Don't leave them game early / That's how Ma$e screwed up/ Throwin shit around the whole place screwed up / Maybe I should call Ma$e so he could pray for us) then later threw him a bone with a spot on a G.O.O.D. track, Kanye was pretty invested in being a part of Ma$e's entourage. He even shouts out, uh, himself for having "made it" just for standing at the back of this Harlem World crew. Aww, early dreams!

2. Ma$e really was a huge dick about his hook-ups with Brandy (calling her a hooker in song lyrics was sort of the first indicator). His coy response to questioning here? "She just got a crush on me, that's all I can really say. Ain't my girl, though." Ew.

3. Kanye West's hometown crew was comprised of people named "John-John, Leonard, Aaron, and Timmy."

I hope we've all learned something useful here today.
