The Creepiest Float at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade

Plan on being baffled when watching this year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. This year, alongside the Sonic the Hedgehog and Ronald McDonald balloons marched down the street, there will be one incredibly depressed clown, weeping from the bottoms of his helium-filled heart. That grayscale clown goes by the name “Companion” and was designed by street artist KAWS in the 1990s. This parade will mark his first appearance in the skies of New York.

This won’t be the only time the Macy’s parade has shown an artsy balloon for grown-ups. Each year since 2005, Macy’s has given artists a chance to transform one of their creations into a big ass balloon. Like KAWS’ crying fellow, Burton’s undead balloon character, looks creepy, too. Cover your childrens’ eyes! Takashi Murakami, in 2010, was a little more popular.

While “Companion” might be a downer, here at The L Magazine, we think he’s pretty great. He’s like a Greek siren of myth, letting us know that Black Friday is on its way.
