Where you’ll find ‘em: All the fairs
You’ll rarely find gloppy, chunky paintings at the fairs. Instead, there’s a more subtle treatment of surface, and we found a fair number of works that seem to take a cue from the color field painters. We liked this painting by Miller Updegraff at Clifton Benevento, who rubbed glass against the canvas to give off a splotchy, glittery effect. Also, the painting features a cat.
