You know, in addition to all those enriching cultural events we've been telling you about, we also spent a lot of time on the internet this year. This means, of course, that whether or not we sought them out, we saw a lot of memes. Which is always sort of a mixed bag. So many memes are dumb as shit and actively make your day worse ("What People Think I Do," we're looking at you). But a meme done right? Transcendant. Or at least, a nice funny thing that happened in your day. Who doesn't like funny things? Other than grumpy cat (*rimshot*). The point is, a few of these things have actually managed to stand the test of time, and for that, attention must be paid. Also, I'm tired, and now seems as good a time as any to re-visit these.

It's safe to assume this is exactly how Bill conducts himself in real life, yes?

Is anything more fun or internet-ready than some kind of animal photo-bombing? Oh, yes, wishing ill upon strangers' tropical vacations. Classics all-around.

Yeah, it's too bad that that a century-old Spanish fresco Ecco Homo was essentially ruined beyond repair by a retiree who took it upon herself to paint over the damage. But really, hasn't the world been given a greater gift as a result?

It's still totally baffling to me that a national political candidate saw fit to do a low-budget photo shoot of his workout routine for Time, but it happened, and nerds with photoshop responded appropriately. It's actually funnier in retrospect, when you're not also worried about this person ending up as second in line to the American presidency.

The pairing of Mitt Romney with Lucille Bluth was almost shockingly apt, and one of the only actually funny pieces of political satire that bubbled up from the internet during election season. And, again, it's all funnier after the fact when you're not also fucking terrified about the election.

As with "inappropriate Bill Clinton" and that stingray, the baseline image is good enough to carry this through as many iterations as people are willing to give it.

Just a great, unexpected use of one of the few shticks from Friends that still holds up all these years later. Also, if Ecco Homo wasn't enough for you, a solid defiling of another Jesus painting.

What? Babies don't drink! This is crazy! Fucking adorable.

It takes a lot to stand out among all the cats the internet has to offer, and Grumpy should be respected for this accomplishment. Also, you did know there was going to be at least one cat on this list, didn't you?

What an amazing, last-minute entry into the 2012 internet lexicon. May you never get lost again, little friend.
