This atrociously marketed, too-neglected marvel about the killing of a millionaire old Texan lady (Shirley MacLaine) by her younger companion (Jack Black) has the moral complexity of a George Eliot novel, related in the casual style of its director's best films, of which this is one. Black does his best work to date, and 2012 MVP Matthew McConaughey matches him as a D.A. who's almost alone in his immunity to Bernie's folksy appeal.
