Art Brooklyn Galleries Go on Vacation

Most of Brooklyn’s galleries have closed for the holidays, but for our readers who really have nothing to do but see art, we’ve put together a schedule for the week. Here’s a rundown of which spaces will be open and shut, and when they’ll reopen in January. Now you’ll know how to keep the out-of-towners busy.
Bushwick
Luhring Augustine

Reopens: February 1, 2013, Ragnar Kjartansson, The Visitors
Guido van der Werve’s show at Luhring Augustine was one of my favorite Brooklyn shows this year. Unfortunately, Saturday was your last chance.

Momenta’s already closed for the year and NURTUREart closed Saturday. You missed that boat, but the new year’s just around the corner.
Storefront Bushwick

Reopens: January 4, 2013, 9:4:1, Adam Parker Smith
Storefront Bushwick is one of Brooklyn’s more playful, colorful spaces, and we’re excited for the upcoming Adam Parker Smith show; Storefront showcased his work at this year’s Bushwick Basel and hands down, his solo booth was one of the best we saw.
Williamsburg
Southfirst

Closes: Not closing! Edward Schexnayder, Uncanny Valley, runs through January 14, 2013
One of Williamsburg’s hidden gems, Southfirst is tucked away just down the street from American Apparel and the Williamsburg Music Hall. We haven’t seen Schexnayder’s current installation—but we’ll drop by this week. All we know is it involves a mirrors, IKEA, and crushed glass, all pretty big trends in art right now. Jack Early and Ellen Takata both had excellent shows at Southfirst earlier this year, and this year, we expect more of the same from these guys.

Pierogi (The Boiler)

Reopens: January 11, 2013, Kevin Cooley, Skyward
Pierogi has two spaces in Williamsburg: the “big” one over in a warehouse close to Greenpoint will reopen in January with a series of work by Kevin Cooley. Their smaller space will kick off the year with a show of Isabelle Hayeur’s disaster-inspired photographs. Happy New Year.
