Will The Next Day Be The Late-Career Bowie Masterpiece We've Always Expected?

Then, of course, there was this somewhat series-redeeming 2006 cameo from Ricky Gervais' HBO show Extras. Gervais has really worn out his welcome since his early-00s, British Office sainthood, so this song ripping him to shreds has only gained in relevance since. It was brief proof that Bowie retains a casually iconic air, if nothing else. But when this is number three...

I don't want to totally sabotage The Next Day with the expectation that it'll be the beautifully creaky meditation on life and aging and the declining arc of a legendary career that I think Bowie's got in him. It seems kind of masochistic and not totally in line with the recent evidence. But what if it was???? It was bound to happen, sooner or later...
