Before Midnight: Unlikelier multi-film franchise: The Fast and the Furious or Before Sunrise? The latter has been intentionally pokier getting there, spacing its movies out at nine-year intervals, but it's also stayed on-point while the Furious movies finally morphed into car-chase heist-spy action movies. Anyway, the point is: no one expected Richard Linklater to turn his sweet 1995 walk-and-walk into a fictional romance version of the 7 Up series, but here we are—a movie that will be the event of the summer for a lot of people (the 68thStreet AMC even did a midnight showing!). I'm pretty sure that between Sundance, Tribeca, and tons of press screenings, I'm one of the last film critics in the country who hasn't seen it yet, but it feels like something that should be seen on a date, preferably with some real-life walking around afterward.
