Police Story Jackie Chan
Police Story (1985)
Directed by Jackie Chan
At a recent Q&A, Jackie Chan said the only way he could dissuade copycats was to execute life-threatening stunts nobody else would be crazy enough to attempt. None were as dangerous as the chandelier shattering fall he performed in this film, his bone-crunching masterpiece. After establishing his martial arts bona fides in Snake in the Eagle’s Shadow and Drunken Master (both 1978), he transitioned into contemporary crime brawlers, less kung fu than balletic Buster Keaton. Having ingested silent slapstick while on a failed Hollywood foray, Chan seamlessly adapted the pratfall to Hong Kong action, making this one of the most uproariously entertaining films of the 1980s. R. Emmet Sweeney (June 24 and 27 at Lincoln Center, part of its Jackie Chan retrospective)
