Oh, another Leonard adaptation with Michael Keaton in it? Cool. Sold. Say no more. Just kidding. There's so much more to say about this 1997 Tarantino adaptation of Leonard's 1992 novel Rum Punch
, not the least of which is that, man, Elmore Leonard wrote some bad-ass women, didn't he? Yes. He did. Tarantino adapted the book himself and while this film is very much a Tarantino film, that's only indicative of how much both the director and Leonard are drawn to convoluted plots, surprising twists and turns and fascinating bit characters. By which I mean that Pam Grier as Jackie Brown is amazing, but also, Robert De Niro and Briget Fonda and (of course) Michael Keaton are also incredible. My favorite performance in the film though, might just be Robert Forster's Max Cherry, one of Leonard's classic good guys who isn't great, just good. An ordinary guy in extraordinary circumstances.
