The Post-Birthday World Lionel Shriver

There have been many discussions about gendered book covers, including a great article by Maureen Johnson about what famous books would have looked like if the authors had been male or vice versa. And this cover is a great example, although an odd one, because while Lionel Shriver is a woman, she has a masculine name, so you'd have thought her cover might have escaped the chick-lit treatment, but you'd be wrong. I mean, this is the author who gave us We Need to Talk About Kevin. She should get better treatment than to have a cupcake wrapper and a wedding ring on a book, even if this one is more conventionally about relationships than Kevin was. Awful.
