Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982)
Directed by Amy Heckerling
Born feminist (probably thanks to that tiger mom he immortalized in Almost Famous) and lovingly bemused pop-culture chronicler Cameron Crowe hit the ground running like Usain Bolt with this script, his first ever. Director Amy Heckerling and a kick-ass cast—anchored by the wonderful Phoebe Cates and Jennifer Jason Leigh—imbue this sneakily smart, ruefully funny crystallization of early-80s SoCal high school culture and the exquisite awkwardness of adolescence with a fizzy, SweeTart mix of emotional honesty and mild social satire. Elise Nakhnikian (Sep 18 at Nitehawk)
