Let's bring it down for a moment: the first piece from Winterreise, Schubert's eerie song cycle set to the poetry of Wilhelm Muller, begins the emotional saga of a spurned lover as he leaves the house of the woman whose affection has gone cold. This is the darker side of snow: a contrast to the warmth and optimism of May, which in Schubert's hands is still, sad, and unnerving.
