Cat People (1982)
Directed by Paul Schrader
This neon-bathed update of the 1942 Val Lewton/Jacques Tourneur classic does more than just explore the original’s erotic undertones—it spreads them open wide for a sleazy, slimy experience that’s as visionary as it is visceral. While the horror genre has never been shy about sexual content, rarely is the sex act itself the central source of terror. Staying true to Lewton’s modus operandi, Schrader transforms what should be a throw-away trash picture into another entry in his trademark mediations on modern disconnection. Nastassja Kinski’s feline attributes have never been put to better use, and Giorgio Moroder’s synths provide the perfect pulse. Zach Clark (Jan 23 at Nitehawk)
