MAKEUP
Dallas Buyers Club
Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa
The Lone Ranger

Will Win: As the only "serious" movie in the group, Dallas Buyers Club probably takes it.
Should Win: Obviously Bad Grandpa, if only for the ACADEMY AWARD WINNER stickers retailers could then affix to the Blu-rays.
Missing: Because this category includes hair, there's some surprise over the lack of American Hustle, but I don't know that I'd kick any of these three out in its favor.

COSTUME DESIGN
American Hustle
The Grandmaster
The Great Gatsby
The Invisible Woman
12 Years a Slave

Will Win: In a mostly historical competition, Gatsby's flash should help it shine through.
Should Win: As much as I appreciated the costuming in American Hustle (WINK) (I'm referring of course to Christian Bale's majestic burgundy suit), I'm a Gatsby partisan.
Missing: The retro-futurism of Her would have been a nice inclusion here, breaking up the monotony without going into the full-on sci-fi stuff that the Academy tends to disfavor.

PRODUCTION DESIGN
American Hustle
Gravity
The Great Gatsby
Her
12 Years a Slave

Will Win: Unless there's a surge of Slave support, I'm guessing Gatsby takes home a second Oscar, old sport.
Should Win: I'm usually a big fan of spaceship-related production design and/or Baz Luhrmann, but the subtlety of Her wins me over.
Missing: Hear me out: I know Prince Avalanche was filmed in what Reverend Lovejoy called the cheap showiness of nature, but the way the movie designs itself within those woods creates a weird little world worth honoring. A more fantastical vision of man vs. nature, Riddick, had some designs worthy of pulp-novel covers.
