Raw Deal (1948)
Directed by Anthony Mann
Feeling cheated? Imagine if Mann had been alive to see the 80s Schwarzenegger vehicle steal the title of Mann’s moody 40s noir; he’d probably have a chafed a little. In Mann’s movie, ex-con Joe, who once took the fall for pyro mobster Rick, chafes plenty in prison. He breaks out and goes on the run with his loyal gal Pat and a smitten social worker, Ann, who demands to see the good in him. Rick rages, and in the mists of San Francisco, back-stabbings throw interesting shadows on the walls. No word on what goes on in the Schwarzenegger shoot-em-up. Elina Mishuris (Apr 19 at Moving Image, part of its Anthony Mann series)
