Of Good Report, a Lolita-esque movie directed by Jahmil XT Qubeka
Of Good Report (2013)
Directed by Jahmil X.T. Qubeka
The South African feature (briefly and mistakenly banned at home as child pornography) borrows Nabokov’s Lolita but ditches Humbert Humbert for Dexter Morgan; lots of people in the movie read Othello, too, but with the notable exception of its sound design, the black-and-white flick mostly eschews lyricism for noir. The gentleman of good report, a rural English teacher, never speaks; in his previous incarnation as a soldier he may have smothered somebody. After his teenage paramour (and student) Nolitha dumps him, he commits totally to a new and bloodier career. Elina Mishuris (May 10, 12 at Lincoln Center, part of its New York African Film Festival)
