The metroPCS stage has long been deconstructed, the members of all 300 bands have gone home, and the last of Heineken beer cans have been picked off from Bedford Avenue. The only thing that remains from this year's Northside Festival is the happy memories, the facebook pictures, and an overwhelming amount of press and writeups from fellow publications like our own. Thanks for all the good times this weekend, whether they were with stagediving bunnies at Knitting Factory or tiny, tiny denim shorts at the Les Savy Fav show. We love you Brooklyn, good night!

Take a Walk in the Middle of Bedford Today, Legally!

Posted on Sat, Jun 26, 2010 at 10:11 AM

It's Day 3 of the Brooklyn group-hug that is Northside Festival, but it's Day 1 of Williamsburg Walks: A two day shut-down of Bedford avenue between N 4 and 9th Sts organized by the Neighbors Allied for Good Growth, the L Magazine and Project for the Public Spaces with the support of the New York City Department of Transportation Weekend Walks Program. There will be two whole days of good old fashioned sustainable fun and a chance to “rethink your public space”. There will be perfume mixing, pickle preserving demos, kids activities, walking tours, 12 public art installations, brewery tours, and a giant picnic in the middle of the street.

So bring the kids and the dogs and the bikes! Leave those clunky, ozone-hating cars at home. Check out the Williamsburg Walks website for more comprehensive listings.

Liars and Fucked Up is having an Afterparty and Lady Starlight Will Be There.

Posted on Fri, Jun 25, 2010 at 6:50 PM

We love you, Mike.
  • We love you, Mike.
Tomorrow, after the will-be-awesome Liars/Fucked Up show at the metroPCS stage at Barge Park, the bands will be holding an office party for the hard working folks at L Magazine at Red Star Bar. Lady Starlight will be dj-ing, there will be $3 SoCo with lime shots, and L Mag music editor Mike Conklin will be awkwardly trying to pretend he doesnt like Lady GaGa while he chats with Starlight (who is responsible for making GaGa into the Boy George reincarnation that she is, duh, read Rolling Stone).

YOU can come to the party too with your badge, because, you have one! Or you can buy a ticket, wait to get in, cry somewhere. Your choice.

So congratulations, The L Magazine, for having a band throw you an office party. What does that say about your office?

The Northside Festival kicked off with fervor last night with a cute little stage dive from Wavves at the Crunch Stage at the Knitting Factory. A bunch of other shit happened too, but we're not concerned with hipster bickering. Hipckering.

Speaking of beer, the Heineken Lounge at Northside Headquarters will be open from noon to 10 pm today. Come say hi, wipe your sweat on your sleeve, and pick up your badge!

Reminder: Lots of Brooklyn Vegan Shows Going on at Northside

Posted on Thu, Jun 24, 2010 at 3:58 PM

We've been getting unbelievable amounts of press covering the first day of The Northside Festival, but Brooklyn Vegan's been bingeing on us all day, so they deserve a shout out.

Check out their shows at Europa, Union Pool and Music Hall of Williamsburg on Saturday night and Coco 66 on Sunday.

Also, we have way too much beer over here at the Heineken Lounge at Northside Headquarters on 118 Bedford. Come drink it.

Check out this picture of L Mag intern Robert Tumas and his lovely fiancee Candice, looking so happy to be spending the week before their wedding constructing the innards of the Heineken Lounge at Northside Headquarters. They're taking in the lovely smells of Heineken, Pirate's booty, and Sex and the City 2 promotional candle sets (yes, available in badgeholder giftbags). All this (including Robert) and more can be found at the Heineken Lounge at Northside Headquarters on 118 Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg. Stop by today to buy a badge, pick up a badge, or just give us a hug. Hours are:

Thurs: 12-10
Fri: 12-10
Sat: 12-10
Sun: 12-7

Bring us a watermelon or something, we're a bit dehydrated from all the Heinies.

Northside Film Spotlight: Brooklyn Shorts and NYC Animation

Posted on Wed, Jun 23, 2010 at 10:34 PM

We continue our previews of the films on tap for this year's Northside Festival with a 2-for-1. On Friday night, at 8pm, Animation Block Party will present a Best of NYC Animation program; and on Sunday at 6pm, Rooftop Films will present a Brooklyn Shorts program.

Animation Block Party and Rooftop Films are two organizations with deep ties to the city's local filmmaking community—Block Party with their annual presentations of funky local animations, and Rooftop with its sociable mixing of American indie features and local up-and-comers. You can see tons of samples of ABP shorts here, and Rooftop has details on their line-up here. I just looked at the list, and the first synopsis I saw began, "There is no place to hide for the Mystery Hair Man of Williamsburg." So I think it's fair to say we're in good hands.

The Northside Festival Starts TOMORROW!

We're only a day away

Posted on Wed, Jun 23, 2010 at 1:43 PM

If today is yesterday's future, then tomorrow is the Northside Festival. So buy yourself a badge, or maybe some tickets to the metroPCS stage at Barge Park, hop on the trolley, turn on the radio, go to the movies, get your art on, and get some discounted Heinekens and Soco spritzers with us. And then put that in Foursquare, whatever that is. We'll be at Headquarters if you need us, but please, go put those ears to work. Happy Summer!

Proud to Admit that Northside Loves Foursquare

Posted on Tue, Jun 22, 2010 at 4:54 PM

Those of you Foursquare users can earn this awesome Northside Festival badge by checking into three (3) different Northside venues during the festival weekend. This includes any concert venue, any art gallery, any restaurant/bar with a Northside badge deal, indieScreen + the metroPCS stage at Barge Park.

We're so excited we just built a guitar of empty Heineken bottles from last year. The sound's pretty good, but you'll have to come by our Headquarters at 118 Bedford to check it out yourself. Then put it in the Foursquare!

Bet You're Wondering Where to Pick Up Your Northside Badge

Posted by admin on Tue, Jun 22, 2010 at 3:07 PM

Northside is only one day away and we here at The L are pumped. PUMPED. But before the heavenly bells of indie rock ring out at the crack of noon on Thursday and the music begins, you’ve got to get acquainted with a few Northside facts, and get pumped yourself.

You can pick up your festival badges at The Heineken Lounge at Northside Headquarters on 118 Bedford Avenue between N 12th and N 11th Streets. Headquarters will be your spot to get festival info, pick up festival guides, and to come and bother us if you need directions to the Barge Park (its at the end of Franklin, for the last time!).

Here are the hours that James Franco will be there to personally answer questions and hand out badges (kidding! or are we?):

Thursday (6/24) 12pm-10pm
Friday (6/25) 12pm-10pm
Saturday (6/26) 12pm-10pm
Sunday (6/27) 12pm-7pm

UPDATES on NORTHSIDE: If you aren’t totally e-challenged you can get updates from us at the festival all weekend long on Twitter. And remember, the reason Twitter is cool (the only reason) is because it works both ways and we want to hear what you think - if you tweet about the festival, use the hashtag #northsidefestival so we can follow your coverage.

BONUS!!: We're also offering a Foursquare badge that “users” can “earn” by checking into 3 or more official Northside venues, including concert spaces, art galleries and bars and restaurants that have specials for festival badge-holders. So what does that mean exactly? I have no idea, but they tell me the people who know, will know, and will just leave it at that, deal?

Good luck out there and happy concert hunting!

Northside Film Spotlight: NY Export: Opus Jazz

Posted on Wed, Jun 16, 2010 at 4:50 PM

click to enlarge We'll fly one day.
  • We'll fly one day.
You've probably heard a lot about the Northside Festival by now, but you've likely heard less about the honest to goodness film festival that's new to the Northside lineup this year, and features films presented by The L and a number of partners. Screenings are at indieScreen, the new theater on Kent Avenue, and you can waltz in with your badge in hand, or else buy tickets to individual screenings here. Let's get to know The L's presentation.

On Friday, June 25, The L Magazine presents NY Export: Opus Jazz, starring dancers from the New York City Ballet reviving the classic midcentury choreography of Jerome Robbins, in locations across the city. The dance has been described as the “abstraction” of West Side Story, and it feels that way, snappy, saunter-y, slangy and communicative. The movements of the dance are staged in striking New York locations—the High Line, an under-construction apartment building, a school gym, and, first and most marvelously, the McCarren Park Pool. Directors Jody Lee Lipes and Henry Joost aren’t shy about moving the camera or cutting during the dances, but—and this will come as something of a surprise to the many of you who regularly watch movie musicals—they do so with an authentic understanding of how to emphasis and heighten the movement of the bodies observed.

The film opens with the dancers moving through backdrops of city life, and closing with shots of the local color in motion. The Robbins dance, inspired by the physical life of the city, is returned to its origins in a marvelously organic-feeling feat of symbiosis.

Arts at Northside

Posted on Wed, Jun 16, 2010 at 1:55 PM

We've teamed up with the Williamsburg Gallery Association to bring some high art and high culture to the Northside Festival. All participating galleries will be open late into the night and will have an agenda of special Northside excusive events. There will be parties, performances, and even silk screening demos. Check out the schedule here.

This Way to Fucked Up, Both the Show and State of Sobriety

Posted on Wed, Jun 16, 2010 at 11:48 AM

If you're a member of Les Savy Fav, A.A. Bondy, or Mr. Elvis Perkins, or if you're planning to attend one of the Northside Festival's four outdoor concerts at the MetroPCS stage in Barge Park, you're probably wondering how to get there.

From the Greenpoint Avenue Station, walk west on Greenpoint Ave toward the water. Hang a right on Franklin and walk up (north) till you hit the water, right after crossing Dupont. Park will be on your left. We even made you a map so you don't get lost.

barge_map.jpg

We'll also be having shuttle buses at the Bedford Ave stop on the L and the Greenpoint Avenue Station to take you right to where the bands are playing, so if you have little arm strength to carry your guitar/amp/piano/backpack of beer, we got you covered.

Don't forget to buy your tickets to all outdoor shows at the MetroPCS stage at Barge Park! Or if you want to go to EVERYTHING, become a member of Les Savy Fav. But you're probably better off just buying a badge.
