Rock Climbing
Brooklyn Boulders, 575 Degraw Ave, Gowanus
Cost: Daily pass $22, monthly $95, learn the ropes class $75 (includes 2 day passes and 1 gear rental)
Calories burned per hour: 550
Sweat level: Moderate to considerable
Soreness the following day: Moderate
Once you’ve passed the requisite “Learning the Ropes” class, you are free to climb with a partner or find one at the gym. Alternatively, bouldering on shorter walls with thicker floor padding doesn’t require any additional safety measures short of common sense and can be done on your first day. Both types of climbs will have you sweating within ten minutes and your forearms burning within five. Until you become proficient, expect most of the soreness to stay in your arms, but experienced climbers engage a lot more of their legs and core. The gym has more than 20,000 feet of climbing surface with route difficulty ranging from 0-12 (translation: pretty easy to really fucking hard). The monthly membership is the best way to go as far as savings and it also includes daily yoga classes.
