This year saw the record for highest-selling artwork surpassed twice, first with Giacometti edging out a Picasso sale from 2004, and then with Pablo regaining the auction throne with a nine-figure sale three months later. All this action at the very top of the art world pecking order suggests a regained confidence among collectors following last year's collective moment of caution and uncertainty.
